Here are some frequently asked questions on metal roofs
Metal roofs haven’t been around for a very long time, especially when compared to other types of roofing. Since they’ve been introduced, people have gradually begun to familiarize themselves with metal roofing, but the world still doesn’t have a firm understanding of what the heck they are! They make sense from a very basic standpoint: they’re metal and they’re a roof. However, people who are installing a new roof on their home and weighing their options might be more inquisitive on some of the details regarding metal roofs. We at Top Construction are more than ready to answer some of your frequently asked questions on metal roofing:
How long do they last?
Metal roofs are the poster child for long-lasting roofs. Asphalt shingles are weaker and wear down after being exposed to the elements for so long. They need to be replaced about once every 12 years, which is at least once during the span of someone living in a home. Metal roofs, on the other hand, can last up to seventy years before they need to be replaced. That’s about two to three generations of people living under that roof before you even need to have a new one put in place.
Can you put a metal roof over existing shingles?
Yes, technically you can! Metal roofs are durable, sturdy, and lightweight; adding them on top of what’s existing isn’t always a problem and you could still reap all of the benefits of the metal roof. However, this can be a problem in the future. While it’s less time and money to just place the metal roof over what’s already there, you’re going to have added trouble when the time comes to replace both roofs. Additionally, if you do choose to install a metal roof atop the shingles, you should still thoroughly inspect the roof for signs of damage, dry rot, or anything else that could be a precursor to a catastrophe.
What are metal roofs made out of?
Metal, duh! Kidding, we know that you mean “what type of metal?” It really depends on the company who is installing your metal roof. Top Construction prefers to use galvanized steel because of its resistance to wear and tear and because of its malleability. We can shape it into different shapes and styles that work with the style of your home. Our roofs are also composed of multiple layers, including an underlay, several layers of galvanized steel, and an epoxy coating. Everything used in our process is meant to ensure longevity and style!
Do they all look the same?
Absolutely not! There are quite a few styles and colors that you can choose from when designing your metal roof. Some things that our company offers is Grande style, Bond style, and Modular panels amongst much more! If you have an idea for what you want your roof to look like, don’t hesitate to ask us! We’ll work with you to make the finished product a masterpiece suited to your home. Additionally, there are a ton of color options to choose from. Whether you want a classic grey or a more modern red, we can make your idea a reality!
Won’t they rust?
It makes sense that metal when exposed to the elements naturally oxidizes and then rusts. Fortunately, the engineers who designed the materials that go into metal roofs took this into account. The materials that we use for our metal roofs are layered with a protective coating in addition to being galvanized. That means no rust for the duration that your roof sits atop your home.
Are they heavy?
Nope! An entire roof of metal seems pretty heavy, right? But the layers that we use are thin enough—sturdy, nonetheless—to the point that they’re weightless in comparison to traditional asphalt. They’re so lightweight, in fact, that you could install one on top of the roof that’s already in place! Don’t worry, it won’t crush your home!
